I've been a licensed ham for several years. Baofeng can sometimes be a joke in the amateur radio world since they are generally below average quality but highly prolific due to the low cost. The UV-5R is likely their most commonly purchased model as it provides an exceptional value. With more esteemed name brand handhelds costing a couple of hundred dollars, the 5R costs a small fraction of that. This particular setup has everything you need to start communicating over VHF and UHF with the radio, battery, charger, and antenna.Though the 5R is not the best radio on the market, it is hard to argue the value of the product. It does work after all, just not as well as some of the other radios. Still, it works perfectly reasonably with reasonable transmission and reception. Programming is done via a free program, Chirp, or you can go through the manual and figure out how to program it via the buttons on front. This is not my first Baofeng and I'm sure it won't be my last. I find them particularly useful in situations where you're afraid a more expensive radio may come to harm like in bad weather or such. At the price point of the 5R, you're not so worried about losing it due to a bad fall or water incursion.

I'm a ham, and I've got a number of hand-held (and other) radios dating back to the 1980s through the present. I purchased a BaoFeng UV-5R+ from Amazon twelve years ago, and it's still working fine. That purchase was more than double the cost today, not counting inflation, which makes it even more, so the price on these has really come down over the years. Also, that 2013 purchase did not come with the 771 Antenna included with this order, it had just the standard stubby. In 2013, the BaoFeng was 10% the cost of a Kenwood TH-79a, which I also own. This M5-R is nearly identical to the UV-5R+ (new M5-R on right, old UV-5R+ in center of photos), but it includes TX/RX on the 1-3/4m (223-225MHz) band, on which the UV-5R+ was RX only. I wouldn't have noticed if I had not looked online, but this radio powers up about one second faster than the old model, so they've made some improvements to the internal micro-controller.Another nice upgrade over the old version is the battery pack. It now sports a USB-C charging port. The new and old batteries are interchangeable and otherwise compatible. I also noticed that the charging dock no longer requires a wall-wart, and the charge state LED is brighter on the new dock.I've also got a Quansheng UV-K5 (shown left in photos), which has similar features, is more "hackable", but does not perform as well with regard to output purity and power. It's nice that BaoFeng is now including an upgraded antenna in the box, but I still recommend purchasing two more accessories that weren't included:1) The hand-held microphone/speaker/control.2) The USB programming cable (also compatible with Quangsheng).Note: I recommend getting a USB cable that has an FTDI serial chip, not the CH340/341, CP210x, or PL2303HXA chips. You might spend a dollar or two more for the FTDI version, but it will work across operating systems, and is usable with the new WebSerial API (for programming via the web browser).

FInally got the full package! I'm sure different people look for different things in their radios but this is the complete package for me. I have a couple other M-5R radios that are the 5 watt version along with a UV-5R 8W. The M-5R have the copy frequency option but the 8 watt UV-5R did not. This version of the M-5R is 8 watts (confirmed), copy frequency and comes with the USB chargeable battery! My opinion of the complete package. Only change I would like to see is the badging at the bottom of the radio say M-5R 8W. I have the greeting set to that message so I know which radio im grabbing. Thanks for finally putting this package together!

Bought this radio to pair with my other Baofeng radios. These are good radios, but this is NOT a UV-5R. It is a M-5R.....why does this make a difference?...Not much if you are going to program the radio manually, but if you intend to use CHIRP to program this radio, CHIRP currently does not support this radio.

Does everything a UV-5R does with added air frequency (monitor) and copy frequency. Shows to be 8w. However not tested. No complaints.
