The bracket on my Explorer snapped, and this replacement is slightly thicker in the yoke area so hopefully it will last a long time. Tricky to get the old one off, but this new one put our SUV back into operation again.

Good replacement and much cheaper than replacing whole column which is what the dealer wanted me to do. Installed in half hour and car was back on the road 👍

Exactly what I needed to repair my 2003 Explorer XLT. I was shocked when the shifter came off in my hand with the truck in gear (one of the "ears" broke off the old part) but I was glad Amazon sold this part to fix it. Not too difficult to replace once I got the column apart, and it worked great. I actually replaced the compression spring in this unit with another "lighter" one I had on hand from another project (try a few til you find one you like), and I like the feel of the shifter now much better, it doesn't feel like I have to pull the my guts out on the stick to get the truck out of park. I think that was probably one of the reasons the original failed in the first place, the spring effort was too high. Took off 1 star since I needed to use the lighter spring.

I purchased this part in February and had it professionally installed at a shop. It worked great until this weekend when the new part, this part, broke too. Now I have to pay another shop visit to fix the same problem again. I'm not made of money and this simply is not fair. If I had any other choice of manufacturer I would not be buying this again but no one in my area has this part in stock and I need my truck so that I can drive to work and get a paycheck every two weeks.Edit::: I wish to appologize. The above post was what I was originally told happened... it broke... when I got it to a "2nd" repair shop, they told me what Actually happened. The original repair shop never put the snap ring onto the back end of the Dorman part so it was just a matter of time before the gear shift started flopping all over the place again. The second shop suggested that I contact the first shop to see if they would fix their mistake under warranty... they refused saying that they didn't see a snap ring, that it was my fault they must not have seen a snap ring, and that they didn't even know where a snap ring would fit onto the Dorman part. The Dorman part comes with a snap ring by the way and if you look at the picture of the product, although hard to see, there is an groove for the snap ring to fit into just behind the ring of grooves at the upper right end of the long part in the picture. With snap ring pliers, it's an easy fix. Sadly once the ring breaks (not likely) or in my case with it never being installed, once the gear shift goes out of alignment again, (mine got stuck in park), it can be a nightmare to get the dashboard apart and fix it yourself. I already had my truck towed to the 2nd shop before discovering the problem and so they are going to do the work for me, so basically: this part is strong and does a great job...if you are going to do a self install it's actually pretty easy but you will need a rotary grinder with strong sanding discs and it took me a few "Hours" to get the old part out when though the original had snapped in to it didn't snap in a place that made it easy to get out so I had to cut it out. Once out, the installation of the Dorman part is a breeze (just don't forget the snap ring lol). If I might suggest, internet search "explorer forums" and this Dorman part in the same search... they have step by step guides for Ford/Mercury column shift replacements without paying hundreds of dollars and some times it only takes 15 minutes or so to fix. Good luck.

This was one of the best finds I've made on Amazon. After reading a lot of posts about how people were told they had to replace their whole steering column, I was overjoyed to find this replacement part. It is actually better quality than the original part and it fits BETTER. The column shifter used to be difficult to move to the Park position and after the old one snapped in half and I installed this new one, the shifter moves smoothly to all positions. I highly recommend this part and it wasn't very hard to install.

Vehicle: 2005 Ford ExplorerProblem: Shifter handle sheared off due to low quality metal used by Ford. Ford dealership wantedto charge $1850 for the complete replacement of the steering column because they do not sell repair kits. LuckilyI found this kit.Solution: Removed steering column lower and upper covers by removing 3 screws on the bottom of the unit. This gave me access to work inside the steering wheel column. I used a cutting tool (dremel with a metal cutting blade) to cut the retaining ring holding the shifter kit to the steering wheel column, which made it easy to slide out after it was removed. The pin on the other end can be squeezed out using adjustable pliers. Once the old broken piece is out, you can move the steering wheel to allow enough room to slide the new replacement shifter kit. Make sure to reinstall two spacer sleeves that are place on each end of the shaft, and ensure to take care not to damage the bronze spacer with the ball joint that slides and moves the actual shifter assembly cable. Other that, everything else is self-explanatory by looking at the parts. Overall this kit saved me a substantial amount of money, and I highly recommended as the perfect solution to repair a broken shifter. Conclusion: Even if you are not mechanically inclined, the repairs was very easy. If you do not feel comfortable making repairs or do not have the tools, buy this part and find a local mechanic to do the work. It took me only 20 minutes to make this repair, so I wouldn't pay more than $250 dollars.

Perfect fit for my 2002 Explorer. No modifications needed with this one, the pin and spring clip fit perfectly. I chose not to remove the steering wheel and airbag assembly to avoid any unforeseen risk or consequences. There are two brass bushing collars in the steering column hole where this part fits into (one on each end), I needed to take the bushing closest to the steering wheel out and slide it onto this new part prior to inserting it into position and then press down the little spring loaded button on the part to slide it passed the steering wheel. It's easier to do than explain but it worked. Having never done this before it took me about 30 minutes to take the old part out and 30 minutes to put the new part in. If I were to do it again it would be half that time.I strongly recommend buying the part and giving it a try.
