Better to pay for the real deal than waste money on aftermarket parts.

The shaft fit like a champ, this was the second one I'd purchased (two different trucks), as the first fit so well. Not worth saving the little bit of money on the cheaper steering shafts, they don't last. Spray both ends with penetrating oil, and use a large screwdriver or cold chisel to open the split joint, mostly at the rack end. Should take under an hour to complete, including cleanup.

My 2006 F150 had been struggling the last 1+ year with steering difficulty. Would be difficult to turn and then break loose. Then other times was fine. I sprayed different rust sprays that worked intermittently. Some mechanics said it may be a pump and other said maybe rack and pinion. I read many reviews online for lower steering shaft OEM parts as well as many videos on how to install/replace. I took a chance (I do just about zero work myself on my vehicles!!).As per the videos I loosened the 2 bolts. Used 13mm and 10mm sockets. Bottom bolt was difficult to reach but I removed one of the air intakes for better access and used a standard extender. The lower bolt took the longest due to the wrench unscrewing it about 1/5 of a turn at a time. I had to push aside a radiator hose as I was turning it. difficult but it comes off with some patience. The top bolt came off easy with a little force. The old steering shaft came off after a few hits with a hammer. I cleaned (brushed off) the bolts and put a little bit of loctite for screws (blue liquid). Good thing is that the new steering shaft goes on very easy (I would clean off any old rust after the old part is removed to make the new part go in easier). Both bolts hand screwed very easily most of the way so it made install much easier than removal. Last I asked one of my kids to turn the steering wheel slightly to align the new steering shaft to the shaft coming from the steering wheel. Definitely worth doing it yourself. I saved hundreds of dollars in this 1 hour job.

Yes it is way more expensive than Dorman or some other part, but it will fix your fix your truck for another 10 years (or however old yours is) and those aftermarket replacements will break sooner than you might expect. Also the steering feels so so good compared to aftermarket. I bought this after having TWO Droman units fail on me (clunk) both within 6 months from the day I installed them and this genuine part not only fixed it right, but also made the steering feel tight like on a new truck.

On my 2007 Ford Expedition I started to have some minor resistance when steering, it would bind, free up, then bind again throughout a turn (consistent with what you would expect from a bad U-joint.Had some concerns with some of the aftermarket options since some reviewers mentioned there was some “slop” in the steering wheel after installing. Considering the importance of this shaft and I wanted my steering to be as tight as possible so I spent the extra ~$100.00 and got the OEM part.Part is OEM (as advertised) and delivery was prompt. Installation was easy and most importantly steering is tight with no “slop” in it so I’m glad I spent the extra money on this part.If you don’t want to take a chance on an aftermarket product you can buy this one with confidence.
