Waited too late to return it. It doesn't fit either one of two Lane cedar chests, both "rectangle" types. One is from 1973 and one is from the 1940s. This latch has too much material at the top (the folder part of the metal plate) for either chest, it sticks up and keeps the lid from closing all the way.Oddly enough, the screw holes line up PERFECTLY, but the body of the lock is wrong, so nothing fits. The large round cylinder fits into a milled-out part of the chest, but since it is wrong, then the screw holes can't align anymore and the whole lock sticks up proud and the lid won't close. Other 1-star reviewers here have had the same issue so it's not just me.

The lock portion of this does technically fit in the 1950’s lane chest I bought this for, however because the piece that goes on the lids latch piece is so short, it no longer latches shut at all. It looks better than the original that was missing the exterior lock, but it is functionally useless.

I have an old cedar chest that has a recall on the locking mechanism. After waiting 2 years for a replacement, I decided to order my own. Quick service and easy to install. I highly recommend this to family and friends.

I received the item quickly. It didn’t fit in the chest perfect. Could just be because the old lock was the original lock and it was in the chest since 1954 however the product did fit. I had to wiggle it into place and the screws finally lined up the way they were supposed to. It locks. I had to change the top piece as well because the old lock was different than the new one where it latches.

I wanted to use these latches to replace two originals in antique Lane cedar chests that I restored so that I could sell them legally. The latches fit into the mortises but do so differently than the originals. The lid plate is thicker than the original and the lock sits just a bit higher. The combination means that the cedar chests no longer seal as they did originally. The key fits sloppily into the lock so badly that one lock jammed and had to be removed and returned. I have a feeling that the lid plates will be removed by the buyers. So you have to choose between a poorly functioning compliant replacement lock that might work or removing the original latch so that the chest will not lock or latch... In the future I will leave the original lock in the chest and just remove the lid latch.

This chest is about 80 years old and this lock fit and works perfectly. A bit pricy but worth it

To order the correct lock, look at the shape on the lid, not the bottom. That was not clear and I had to return to first one.

There must be a variety of Lane latch configurations because I don't know how this product could receive 5 stars otherwise. My original latch is on the right and the new latch is on the left. It is quite obvious that they are for different chests. If the mounting position on the new latch was adjusted so that is sat against the striker plate everything would line up fine. As is the option would be to remake new screw holes in the chest and have the striker plate sticking up above the rim of the chest or make the lock button hole in the chest into a slot so the the latch would sit down into position properly. For the money, might as well just remove the striker on the original chest and not worry about having a latching mechanism. Betty that than butchering a nice piece of furniture. Just make sure you compare your latch with this picture before you order. If yours looks like the one on the right, don't waste your time on this product.
