Q&A

1. If the load is 300w, should I choose 300w transformer?

No, if load is 300w, you should choose bigger power consumption transformer than 300w, because all low voltage transformer has consumption loss in AC to DC convert process.

2. How do you choose suitable transformer?

To choose suitable power of transformer, you should check the convert efficiency, like this transformer is 85%, so the best and long life span load is about 255w or under.

3. Why does the transformer get hot?

As question 1, AC to DC convert process, the power consumption lost, where does it go ? Turn to heat energy.

There is a flaw in the design of this power supply that can destroy LEDs on your strip. While it does have short-circuit protection, it does NOT have Overvoltage protection... Even though it says it in the listing. Overvoltage protection is a circuit that make sure the output is NEVER above 12volts. Overvoltage protection is meant to protect the LOAD, not the input of the power supply. I connected it to my oscilloscope set the trigger to 13 volts, and measured surges of over 40 volts when a short circuit condition was introduced... There is NOTHING in there to protect the output from going WAY over 12 volts in this condition. Now this is really bad because it means that if you are trying to test the voltage drop at the end of an LED strip, which is quite a common thing to want to know, and you accidentally touch your meter probes together or otherwise cause a short circuit, while the power supply is short circuit protected, these enormous transient spikes WILL burn out some of your LEDs. I learned this lesson the hard way over a decade ago, so now when I get a new power supply, I always put it on my scope to see if it has overvoltage protection.Overvoltage protection circuit right before the output would prevent this massive surge from ever getting out of your power supply and prevent burning out your LEDs. Short Circuit protection is nice, as it protects the power supply, but if it resumes on its own and has no overvoltage protection like this one, then you are going to get a lot of burned-out LEDs because it nearly impossible to not cause temporary shorts when trying to measure the voltage with a meter along the LED Strip, especially when they are upside down under a cabinet. The stupid thing is, that all they needed to do was stick a 13 Zener Diode across the output, like a 1n4743a and this power supply would be clamped at 13Volts... And in quantity those Zener diodes are less than 1 cent, so there was no reason to leave it out. You can buy them here on Amazon and add proper overvoltage protection to this power supply yourself, just connect the end with the stripe to the positive lead. Even with no load, the transient spikes are not larger than 14Volts. There are much better active Overvoltage protection circuits that can be implemented that would prevent the output from even getting this high, I just wanted to point out that in its simplest form, a simple Zener diode would be enough to reduce the transient spikes from over 40 volts down to 14 volts.

I lost the adapter to a Mini PC that I wanted to use again for some light-duty use. All I knew was that I needed a 12v power supply at around this amperage. One end connects into AC power, and on the other I soldered on a DC barrel jack. Then after putting it into the Mini PC and pressing the power button: viola! Worked like a charm. So if it works for my very particular purpose, I have no doubt it would run 12v LEDs or any other low amperage 12v device.

I got this power supply because I do a lot of WS2812b LED installations, and the most common problem I have is a weak power supply. Underpowered LEDs will fade out as the string gets longer, or if an LED controller is being powered by the same power supply, it may reset and cause the LEDs to flicker. This power supply is excellent and I have experienced none of those issues. It allows me to power very long runs of 12v LEDs with no power loss at the end of the strips, even at full brightness. It is also perfectly quiet with no moving parts, and all you have to do is plug it in, there is no switch to mess with. Overall a solid choice for powering permanent LED installations.

This transformer is just what you need for a larger low voltage installation. It's waterproof, but you will need waterproof connectors to the supply wires as the provided connectors are not.

This is one heck of a unit! I have been playing around with LEDs and controllers as a hobby for a while now and I was pleasantly surprised when I found this unit rated at 300w. The weather resistance makes this unit ideal for most projects I can imagine me doing with the peace of mind that I don't have to drill extra holes or keep it in the house for outside lights. I haven't had a chance to really stress test it too much as of yet, but it seems pretty promising.

Im going to use this power supply to replace the lighting transformer in my spa. It will also be used to run a small fan to vent the equipment cabinet during long cycles in hot weather. For my application it should never see over .5 amps, but it will be supplied constant power, endure high ambient temps and there is the possibility it could get wet.I did a little bit of my own testing on it and it seems up to the task. I submitted it to several different loads including a small fan and a higher wattage lamp. Event at 1.25 amp the unit never felt any warmer than room temp. It supplied a pretty consistent 11.9v during my tests.I want to note that it does not appear to be listed in any way. The label sports a couple material certifications only. On Amazon, there are several very similar units in the same price range that do have some sort of listing on the label.
