How to distinguish raw xuan paper and ripe xuan paper?

  • The main difference between raw rice paper and ripe rice paper is its flexibility, wet dyeability, ink absorption, toughness, etc. Raw rice paper is softer than ripe paper, has a certain of diffusibility and strong ink absorption capacity.
  • If you want to distinguish between raw rice paper and ripe rice paper, you can use water to test it. Drop few water on the rice paper, If it spreads slowly around, it is raw rice paper. If it does not spread immediately or does not spread, it is ripe rice paper.

Lovely paper but big crease. However, I found out you can iron rice paper. I kept it at slightly hotter than lowest setting and got most of the crease out. I probably could have gotten it completely flat with a bit more patience.Even the lightest pencil lines are difficult to erase without creating a hole. But overall, this allowed me to create a wonderful hand written project. I needed a large size and this was worth it.Oh, felt based anything bleeds on the paper. I used extra fine point gel pens, no smear.

I was going to use it to make underglaze transfers for pottery using a silk screen, but it is just a bit to thick to get good image transfers. I will find another use for it eventually

Just gave this rice paper a try for mixed media /art journaling. Find it quite nice to work with. Bit more to it than tissue paper and yet still fades into the background when adhered with matte medium. Tested with a fountain pen and the ink didn’t even bleed through to the back- amazing. Will purchase again.

MEGREZ Chinese Watercolor Practice Chinese Japanese Calligraphy Writing Sumi Drawing Xuan Rice PaperI purchased the Shu (treated) version. It is exactly as it should be. Does not bleed ink at all. I even wrote on it with my fountain pen and it didn't feather. Good for beginners learning Chinese brush calligraphy.
