I was genuinely shocked by what I discovered using this mold test kit. I originally bought it to check our air vents and kitchen surfaces after my wife and I started experiencing unusual allergies shortly after moving into our new home. Once I saw the results, I knew I had made the right call.We already suspected some mold near the air exchange, but this kit showed just how much more was circulating through our home. I followed the instructions, let the samples sit for a week, and the results were eye-opening. Let’s just say—if we ever need antibiotics, we won’t be lacking penicillin! We found significant amounts of Penicillium and even some black mold.After that, we had the vents and air ducts professionally cleaned and took steps to eliminate the mold. It's not uncommon to have some mold spores in any home, especially in Florida, where high humidity makes conditions even more favorable for mold growth. That’s why it’s crucial for homeowners here to stay extra vigilant.The testing process was super easy—just swab, rub, seal, and wait. The manual included clear photos to help identify what you’re seeing, along with helpful health impact info and statistics. This kit has almost all you need. I think it would've been nice to include masking tape as I thought was pictured to help seal the dishes and also tape to an air vent or whichever surface of your choice. It came with 2 petri dishes. The lids do not snap securely so I used the sticky labels to help seal around the edges. I didn't want any spores escaping because once it grows well it's gnarly! It came with 1 pair of gloves and q tips to take samples to then transfer to the dish.I used 1 dish for air testing and the other for surface testing of my bathroom window sill where there is visible mold. Both grew mold. It took 4-6 days to get to proper growth for ID. The instructions state you should see growth in 2 hours which is laughable.The book with pictures of mold for identification only has small photos of the mold. I found the name & description helpful but I think this would be better to view online and offer multiple photos that show stages of mold growth for better ID. I used Google lens to help with this.I'm still not 100% certain of the mold type and danger so I'm ordering a more expensive kit that you can send off to a lab.If you're fine with guess work then get this. If you're like me and value your health more then go with the more expensive tests first instead of spending more money buying this first.Having said that, this is an EXCELLENT way to do an at-home SCIENCE PROJECT with the kids!I think this should suggest and/or include masks. However the ONLY mask I trust when it comes to MOLD spores is a respirator with the proper filters.I gave it 4 stars to use as a science kit. I would have given it 3 if using solely as a mold kit for reasons mentioned above.

UPDATE: We did culture two mold specimens, one in each petri dish. While the mold specimens have distinct features, I had a bit of a tough time trying to match the culture to the pics in the Mold Test Kit Instruction booklet. The pics iin the booklet are quite small, and several of the pics look very similar. I'll have to do some looking online to see if I can find any larger pics, to help usidentify the name of the mold that was cultured.Let me start with the positive to this set. The kit arrived with all of the test kit components, and a very helpful step by step manual included. The test itself is simple, and EASY to do. Simply open the petri dish, and place it in the area you wish to test for one hour. Then close the dish, set in an area where the temp is 70 degrees or above, and wait for the mold spores to grow. I found this last step the toughest, as we don't keep our home at 70 degrees or above, but the porch area gets lots of sunlight warming that room, so I am hoping tucked it out in a spot out of direct sunlight, this will do the trick. I like that the test can be done and processed, without having to pay for added mailing expenses. The downfalls with this set are that the pics to compare the mold cultures too are very small in the instruction book, and many look alike, so hard to tell them apart. Also, our second petri dish was cracked, so we had to tape the bottom as best we could, to try to seal in the culture. We had testing done in our home by a professional one year ago, so I am anxious to see what these trays look like when they are finished. I will update accordingly.

I followed the instructions precisely and didn't take any shortcuts and I don't think this product even works. I did the mold air test next to a spot in my bathroom where there's visual mold in the drywall. Behind my toilet. That's obviously being torn down this spring. I was hoping to use the results from a location that I know without a doubt has mold to maybe gauge the results I got from a different room in my home. I wanted to check my daughter's room. Not that I've noticed anything in her room but simply because she's in it. That makes it the most important room in the entire house to have good quality air in it, ya know? Well the results for the mold in the moldy room exposed for 2 hours literally showed nothing. I question the accuracy of the results. Easy to use, but a waste of time. I don't recommend this.Sorry about the cat foot in the picture. My daughter's cat decided that this was his right when I took the picture.
