It worked better than the really cheap ones; almost two years. It has a temperature sensor on the front which is a bare electronic component. After two years, the delicate leads of this component corroded away, leaving the device in a permanent state of thermal overload disconnect - and therefore useless. A clever mode of planned obsolescence. Shame on you Morningstar.

I had an earlier version of this controller and it has lasted 14 years. This, newer, model is a bit more sophisticated but has actually changed little. I have been really pleased with the Sunsaver. It sits in the corner providing charge from our 180W solar panel to a bank of seven lead acid batteries (wet cells with a capacity of 770 amp hours.). It complements our wind generator and between the two we can almost do without a battery charger. The new model has extra led lights to show functions and, cleverly, the led only blinks every 5 seconds at night thus reducing the amount of battery charge which is wasted on lighting the led. A very clever piece of electronics, solidly built, easy to wire up and adjustable for other types of battery such as gel or agm. It can also power a load up to it;s maximum capacity (mine is 20 amps) as well as charge batteries. It is virtually fit and forget. I would readily buy another.....in fact I just have.
