Bought this because half of the skid plate was rotted off.Jacked up tank a little bit and used 2 jack stands with some small pieces of plywood to support the tank while I took the rest off. Then cleaned everything up and used zip ties to hold tank up, while I slid this one in.Did it all by myself and while I had to weld a bracket on for the transfer case skid plate, it was pretty easy.I wish I had welded the bracket on first as once I got it up there, I wasn’t taking it back down.Welding on the plate with a plastic gas tank was a little hairy.Think they should offer a bolt on bracket for the skid plate, would make it a lot more usable.

This replacement part was very sturdy/heavy. It was a tad difficult to install, but as the picture indicates, a floor jack did the trick for raising it into place. The mobility of the jack also allowed the ability to move it left or right. Overall, the replacement plate did the trick. The included brackets worked well; however, to me the pictures in the instructions were not overly clear. One thing I found odd, was the reviews and instructions said to install the new plate over the existing plate. Would recommend this to another Jeep owner.

So this can fit over the existing tank cover, however mine was so rusted I elected to take the original off. This bolted up pretty easy. If you’re going to remove the original, make sure your tank is close to empty as it will come off with the original cover. The emptier, the lighter.

Like many others, I was attracted to the price of this gas skid plate. The reviews were good enough, but there was that confusion about is it a replacement for your OEM skid? or is it supplemental. I elected to mount it over the old skid plate. The packaging was good and sturdy- it arrived whole. It looked like a box, as it should. No parts fell out like another skid I ordered here on Amazon. The installation should have been pretty straightforward, but it wasn't. Rough Country probably designed the product to fit right over brand new pristine OEM gas skid plates. Well, a lot of us took our Jeeps out wheeling and our skids have dents. That's why we're looking for something more better. If your factory skid is dented up, you're first going to want to pound out those dents to recover that fuel that you're missing out on. But still, once the factory skid is damaged, it will never be shaped the same. As a result, many of the holes didn't really want to match up. With many attempts, I was able to persuade some of the holes to line up. For the rear mount, you really need to take that back tire off or you're just guessing what's going on. Even still, I had to take a Dremel to those holes and hog them out pretty good. And the bolt that's parked under the passenger door- that hole needed to be overhauled!I have yet to test it out, but I'm confident that this skid will do just fine. I have a trip coming up this summer to the Slick Rock Trail in NorCal. I'm going to need it!

I was afraid this wouldn't work well with the Smittybilt engine/transmission, and transfer case skid plates that I already had. It did without any modification to it or the others. I saw one review that mentioned the directions state that the original fuel tank cover (skid plate) has to be removed. It doesn't. The directions don't state that it does. You have to remove various original bolts to bolt this on. Follow the directions, even though they're not perfect, they aren't wrong. I cleaned the original and sprayed some black paint over the surface rust that was there. I'd recommend using rust-conversion paint, but I didn't have any on hand, and I was too lazy to go get any.I used a floor jack to support the plate while bolting it up. The directions mention using a jack stand. A bottle jack or scissor jack would work too. Use a block of wood to keep from scratching the paint. It'll get scratched later, but nobody likes scratching something new.The only issue I had was that bolt holes in the original sheet metal cover shifted a bit when the bolts were removed. It's sheet metal. There are built in stresses, and stress from this skid plate fitting tightly over it. After a bit of prying I managed to get the bolt holes to all line up. If you've never done anything like this, don't freak out when that happens. It's normal. If it wasn't 95º at 10 pm this wouldn't have been hard at all. I'm fat, 63 and hold a steering wheel all day. Don't get in a hurry and you won't have any real problems.

I read mixed reviews and even watch YouTube videos on this before I bought it. Some said you install it over the old one and some said it replaced the old one. I was hoping it would replace as my old one was bent pretty bad. Well, it doesn't replace but goes over. The old one is still needed as it holds the fuel tank up. Since my old one was bent so bad I ended up cutting what I could off of it and just leaving the strap that holds the fuel tank up then put this new one over that. It's not perfect but the best I could do. I really wish it would have replaced the old one.
