This uses a laser or something to detect when you put your soldering tip into the hole. If you don't have it it just the right angle it won't read it and it'll stop spinning. But all that means you just have to kind of move your hand a little bit and it'll start spinning againIt does a pretty good job of cleaning up soldering tips. I also used this to clean drywall off of my drillbits and it didn't work as good for that. Which is not a bad thing I mean it wasn't designed for that but I was full of wishful thinkingThe reason why it doesn't work so good with drillbits is because the brass brushes are just far enough apart for a soldering tip to fit down in there whereas a drillbit has the indentations or the grooves that are slightly deeper then the brushes can reach. It does a great job of cleaning the drywall off the outer Parts of the drillbit but to get down inside of it you gotta kind of finagle it and move around which again is not a big dealIn both situations it cleaned both my drillbits and my soldering tips very well as as soon as I learned the best way to do itI imagine this would work very good too for plastic welding when you use the soldering iron and the plastic gets on the tip and continues to burn and smoke I imagine this would do very well with that as well although it might cause the brushes to get gunked up with the hot plastic but I bet it would clean it very very nicelyIt's very quiet and I think it's a good little addition to a workbench especially when you consider how many different things you have to clean throughout the day. I'm not such a fan of it just cleaning soldering tips. I like the fact that I can clean my drill bits and anything else I can fit in the hole honestly. A pen. A screwdriver, etc.

A day before I requested this item, I had a tiny bead of hot solder fly off the scrubbing pad and go directly into my left eye. Luckily, there was no lasting damage (at least, nothing I notice). This device is fast, thorough, and works with all the tips I use (I mostly use small conical tips). It had no problems getting the tip clean and shiny again, and does the job better than I do with a scrubber (and faster!). The brushing is all inside the housing, so there's no risk of hot solder flying at me anymore, which is greatly appreciated.I've never seen this done before, but to service this tip cleaner, you have to take the housing apart, right? I was looking for screws or a latch, but instead it uses a simple magnet to hold the housing together; it simply and easily pulls apart and then pushes back together. It's a very nice solution, and well-tuned (is not a harsh snapping-together, nor is it a weak magnetic connection).More replacement brushes are included than I'll likely go through in 5 years as a weekend hobbyist. Very pleased with this device's design. Will update if I have more to say as I continue using it.
