I've found Yihua's soldering irons and accessories are pretty nice, and this is no exception - it's a nice work mat at a very fair price. It's my third silicone work mat - I've also tested one from Sainsmart with similar heat resistance and cutout features, and another one that is marketed for children's art use without heat resistance.I'm not entirely sold on the variety of cutouts in the XL variant of this. They're never quite exact for what you're trying to do - the L-shaped cutouts here may be good for certain projects but they're mostly just in the way for the larger PCBs I tend to work on, and the border compartments are small and fiddly. The generic art mat is a bit larger and has just a plain flat surface in the middle, and I do find I prefer that for my usage. The magnetic feature on this one is pretty nice though, so I might come around with more use. However, the plain art mat has no temperature rating, and there's no way I'd trust it with underpinning hot air rework. That's where this mat shines, with its high temp certification, and it's probably worth getting a soldering specific mat for that reason alone. One thing I really appreciate about this mat over my other two is that it's made in a nice deep blue color, which will hide some of the everyday wear and tear your amt will take as you solder. My other mats are light gray and peach, and they show every little bit of dirt and grime - this one should stay cleaner and attractive for longer. This is also the cheapest mat of the three by a fair margin, which is a nice bonus.I felt that 'Extra Large" wasn't actually extra large - at 17x12 this is smaller than the Sainsmart 20x14. But the edge compartments are a little less opinionated on this one so the difference doesn't feel as substantial as it might appear from the numbers alone. My ideal mat would simplify the border compartments to just a strip at the top and give me a big, wide workspace down below, and would be a few inches larger. But I still like this mat quite a bit and at the price it's an easy five-star recommendation. I'd just like to see a future version from Yihua that's even bigger and simpler - just take the design of the "Large" variant and scale it up to XXL and I'm in!

I do a lot of soldering, seemingly more than I ever anticipated that I would. I'm a big DIYer, and I'm fairly competent with electrical work. Every time I break the soldering iron out, I always fish out old things from the recycle box that I can use as a surface cover, to catch any solder that may fall, or just provide protection for my work surface. I was really happy to see this soldering mat, and after taking it out and giving it a good inspection, I'm really happy with it. It's entirely silicone, and very nicely laid out. It has clever design, because there are several compartments that surround the main working area that are good for holding small tools, and small screws. As a hobby, I love to buy cameras that need fixing, and taking them apart for repair involves a lot of small screws. I usually collect yogurt containers to separate everything, but with this soldering mat, it can all be easily organized with the small compartments on the mat. There are a couple of magnetic zones, so you'll be sure the screws don't go anywhere. It's thick enough to provide good protection for the surface of my table, and big enough for pretty much all of my needs. All In all, I really like the way it is designed and made, and I'm confident that it’ll be very useful. I'd certainly recommend it.

I just started getting into hot air rework soldering, and unfortunately the mats I had just wern't cut out for the job. This handles heat up to 932 degrees Farenheit, and is perfectly safe for hot air rework. I have a Yihua hot air device, so I'm already familiar with the brand.A couple things I didn't realize about this mat that I particularly like:1) The L shaped "PCB holder". Or, that recessed section in the middle of the mat. Keeps stuff from moving too much when working with hot air.2) The small component storage slots in the top right corner of the mat. I thought initially that these were for screws, but as it turns out, the pictures make it clear that they're intended for chips you've either removed from a motherboard, or new chips yet to be soldered in. Really cool now that I understand the function. When shopping for my first mat, I didn't really understand the appeal.3) The magnetized sections. I had no idea what the deal was with these, and although I may not like having magnets close to my electronics, I suppose for some things it's okay. And it's generally just nice to know what it's there for.Mat is of decent thickness and material quality. I would recommend the extra large, as it seems to me that anything smaller would feel cramped with hot air projects. Your preference may vary however.

For what it is, it seems relatively well put together. It's not going to have the magnets fall out of it or anything like that. However, I would have liked if the magnetic compartments conformed to the shape of the magnet or vice versa. I could understand better if the compartments were all regular shaped squares or rectangles, but being as some of them are round like the magnets they seem like they'd have been the better choice to be magnetic. Plus that'd have made it easy to figure out which compartments had magnets.I do not know how heat resistant it is since I'm not going to drop a soldering iron on it on purpose, but I have no reason to believe it won't perform. All in all I'd call it pretty average. Nothing about it makes me think it's awesome, but nothing about it makes me think it's bad, either. If you don't have one, they're handy for keeping things sorted while working on computers as well as electronics where you not only want to keep track of the screws, but also in what order you took them out.
