For a super low-cost tri-band handheld this really can’t be beat by any measurement. I’m a ham op for 65 years & have big bux invested in other gear. I’ve always consider these to be the Bic Lighter of handhelds … throw away if ever stops working & recycle the battery.

This Baofeng dual-band 2-meter and 70cm radio has become one of the most popular, entry level radios available. A definite plus is that it now comes with the upgraded 2500mah battery, two antennas, a microphone and other accessories that you used to have to purchase separately! There are far too many features to cover in a review, but suffice it to say that these portable radios can receive 7 different bands which are all legal to monitor without a license. They are a lot of fun and a good way for someone thinking about getting their ticket to become familiar with local repeaters and other amateur radio operators and how they work together. The sound quality is pretty good for something at this price point and they are actually pretty solid, especially for a radio this size, which is very conveniently compact. This is actually one of the first hand-held radios I acquired way back when I first got into ham radio and the quality and improvements have really shown up in this new model. Please note that the description on the seller's page is a little misleading in that it says that this is a radio. This radio will only transmit on 2-meters and the 440 band, but not on 1.25cm also known as the 220 band. The 220 band is receive only. I found this out when I tried to program in a 1.25cm frequency and could not transmit. I re-checked the owner's manual and on page 5 is states that 200-260mhz is Rx only.I can recommend this portable ham radio for general monitoring fun and also as an entry-level piece of kit for the beginning ham.

Im not a radio expert. My experience with radio is keying something up, real similar, and asking for maintenance to come down here and take a look. So I know how to key up. It comes with 2 antennas, a High-gain ANT x 1, 220MHz ANT. What does that mean? Im not sure. I assume the long skinny one is better for ham? and the little stick is good for all other frequencies? I can get National Weather radio stations on the tiny stick, but not the long whip. The layout is real similar to a UV5R. The scan button is no longer the top right * button and has become the # key. It has an FM radio so you can listen to the radio and hear the quality. Its a nice clean good quality radio. Im able to type in Family Radio Service band channels and General Mobile Radio Service channels and listen in on those channels. That means I can listen to walkie talkies if I know the channel band waves. In fact I can just scan all of the band waves with the # button and let it sit there and try to find anything being broadcasted on any channel that is allocated to a 2 way communication, from FRS walkie talkies all the way to HAM. CB is too low and it doesnt scan for national weather radio. to get weather reports you have to long hold 0 to enter scanning the weather band. If you forget and long hold #..you just lost whatever GMRS channel you where monitoring as you told it to scan all transmission frequency. The menu has a function for saving these frequencies but it needs some ledger printout, to indicate the designations. The menu will save this as channel 1 = 462.5625. No one is going to remember what that channel is designated for, unless you have a written ledger indicating what were doing on that channel AKA what the FCC has designated that channel as. Ive heard the chip and format actually has a built in ledger to write into the software the designation such as "walkie talkie Ch.1" but you need to get a cable and software to talk to it through a computer to program it.This is government designated as a HAM in the US by the radio police. Legally I cant key up on anything but CB radio. Which band this does not cover. As an aside, just legally keying up to ask for maintenance to come down here theres a 50% chance all youre getting is "youre not allowed to broadcast, get off my radio". Maybe he mistook me for someone else with a radio but this is WEST and we need maintenance...If youre real lucky this is the conversations you can hear with the scan function. So the utility of it is REALLY good. but to put this into practice..theres alot of legality involved that makes it extremely constraining if not banned to simply key up on an FRS channel to talk to your kid on channel 1 walkie talkie..banned.Its a neat hand held HAM thats better than a UV5R

Great item. Comes with lots of useful accessories, the earpiece, or the handheld speaker/mic. Was able to get in touch with some local Amateur Radio users locally and figure out some of the necessary beginner steps to using this and also the limitations that apparently exist for Baofeng UV5 units. Working on getting my license so i can use one of these for transmitting, but the reality is you may be better of getting a radio that is not restricted like this one is. It is not the radios fault, it is quite capable of doing transmission, and is a great radio, good screen quality, programmable, CTCSS Scanning is a nice feature, and the USB-C and charging station included make it a great beginners "listening only" radio. But apparently there is some FCC rule about Baofeng transmission, so there is that if you live in the US. Outside the US, cant say what rules there are but likely less strict than FCC. Battery life on this is pretty good, ran for about 72 hours straight before low battery alert. Well worth it if you are just getting started with UHF/VHF. Has some emergency features, WX radio frequencies are nice touch and the FM Radio tuner is also good.
