They are used to the arm tight against the windshield so the blade is tight against the glass. This is the only that every goes bad on the arms. The original springs were steel that over time got rusty and broke if they are not broke they are very rusty. This is the only part of the arm that is not made of stainless steel and this unsightly rusty piece causes people to throw away the arm. The new inline tube is made of stainless steel so will never rust again and installs in seconds and now restores your new arm to new. If the old has left rust stains on the existing arm can be cleaned off with rubbing compound or if extensive the car can be LIGHTLY glass bead blasted and will remove . Since the original arm had a brushed Finish the glass will leave a factory finish. If you want a bright finish to your arm use 0000 steel wool with the rubbing compound and will shine up. No need to replace or throw away the old arms - one and a bit of cleaning and they will look new. Little hard to install on original wiper arms but made them work perfectly after installed. No more wiper skipping and chatter.

These worked for my 68 Barracuda with the original anco wiper arms. They are slightly shorter than the originals but work fine.
