I'm quite pleased with this metal adjustable book holder. Right out of the box I appreciated the quality, sturdiness, design and versatility of it and quickly put it through its paces with three different items:+ Large format soft cover book: the tall book fit perfectly and the adjustable holder clips held the floppy pages open+ iPad Pro (sitting within it's thick protective outer cover): heavier than the book, it was perfectly and firmly held in place vertically/horizontally at any angle+ MacBook Air: heavier than the iPad Pro, held it perfectly at any angle of my choosing (though, when typing on its keyboard, it did tend to wobble a bit.) If I intend to use the book holder solely for my laptop, only then would I use the included tool to tighten the connections to hold it solidly in place. For now, I like having the options and flexibility to use it in multiple waysRight now, as I type this review, I'm using this versatile and adjustable book stand for my laptop; I was previously using a wide and heavy laptop stand and like that this holder has a much smaller footprint, especially since my desk is quite small. When I need to free up some precious desk space, I usually store my laptop on a set of wall brackets, and, as it turns out, this stand can sit atop the laptop within its brackets making the pair of them easy to store and retrieve, as needed.I like that the holder comes with a tool to tighten any connections in case you prefer more stability and less adjustability/flexibility.I'm glad I ordered this and would recommend -- and even gift it to -- a friend.

I got this book stand primarily to use in the kitchen to hold cookbooks while I'm cooking. I'm on the fence whether to give it 3 stars or 4 stars. I'm not sure which way I'm going to go. I think I'll list the pros and cons and then go from there.Pros:1. The stand is pretty heavy and feels solid. It will easily support your heaviest cookbooks or textbook. It's all metal with the exception of the little plastic gizmos that are supposed to hold the book open to the right page, which are plastic with metal wires that come around to hold the pages.2. The base has a rubber (or similar material) coating on the bottom so that it won't slide around. In fact, I found that with an average cookbook on it you can't slide it at all.3. It's adjustable in height, viewing angle, and rotation. Because it tends to sag with a heavy book on it you just have to tighten up a couple of nuts with the supplied wrench to tighten the adjustment mechanism. Nice touch.4. It's an attractive anodized (powder coated) silver color, and looks good in the kitchen.5. Because of its metal construction it will be easy to wash it in the sink when it gets greasy. Everything in the kitchen gets greasy at some point...Cons:1. The little "shelf" that a book sits on is pretty narrow - with the cookbook I used in the photos (attached) just a small part of the book is supported.2. The "book holder" part isn't wide enough to hold an average sized cookbook and have any way of keeping it open. In order to use the page holder device you have to slide the book off-center, which could be a balance issue, and means that you can only use the page holder on one side or the other.3. The plastic gizmos for holding the book open isn't adjustable in and out, if it was you could cope with different sized books. The screw that holds it on is TINY - I am thinking of trying to put them on little arms or something, but it will be fussy. Of course, you don't have to use the holders and can just use binder clips or something.4. The way you get the stand to hold a heavy book is to tighten the joints really hard. At that point you can't adjust the stand any more. It's not a huge deal, but maybe fixing the nut to one part and using a knob on the other would make this easier and more flexible. In summary - I really do like this stand. I especially like that I can raise the book several inches above the counter. This is helpful since I wear bifocals and it's hard to read a book at counter height without stooping. The adjustment mechanism and the page holders are a bit fussy, but the stand itself is solid enough that I'll deal with that.OK - rereading what I wrote I realized it's at least 4 stars.

I got this stand originally to hold my iPad in my lap so I could read or watch a video, hands free. Now that I see how clever the arms are, I’m getting other ideas. Obviously, you can put a cookbook on it and have the arms facing down and the wires in front of the panel, to hold it open to your page…or you could put your tablet on it to keep it out of the mess, if that’s where your recipes reside. If you want to thumb thru a magazine, you can flip the arms behind the panel and just rest the magazine on the rubberized lip. I wish I had this when I was collating my class reunion spreadsheet; I could have had all my data at eye-level while typing. I’m even thinking of taking this to bed so I can orient my ipad on it for side viewing. My stand is acrylic and I love that it takes up no visual space. Despite the description saying it’s 10”H x 8”D, mine measures 13.5”x 9.75”. It collapses to about 2”. The base swivels 360, while the other joints go about 180…so this can stand straight up. I’m impressed by the thoughtfulness of the little silicone bumpers they put on the elevating arms…they keep the back of the acrylic panel from getting scratched when the stand is collapsed. (I’ve also noticed that they can jump off when moving the stand, so I may glue mine in place before they get lost.) The bottom of the stand is rubberized so your furniture doesn’t get scratched. The stand part is metal and very sturdy. They even give you a mini lug wrench to tighten it, once you’ve determined your optimal angles. Much as I’m loving this stand, it’s a bit too heavy to travel with…unless you’re driving. At $28 at the time of me writing this, I think it’s a steal!
